Fashion in the Time of Covid-19: How Has the Pandemic Affected the Catwalks?
Rewind to February of this year - editors and buyers from all over the world of fashion were gathered for the start of Milan Fashion Week. Schools and buildings had started to shut down as a result of Italy having the highest number of coronavirus cases in Europe. While the number was less than 200, and covid-19 had not yet been declared a pandemic, eyebrows were still being raised over whether the event - with thousands of people from all over the world under the same roof - should be going ahead. However, with a “show must go on” approach, it did. It was Giorgio Armani among the first of the fashion houses who modified their event as a result of coronavirus, uninviting guests from their live show and instead live streaming their AW20 collection on their social media channels. Of course, as coronavirus cases began to increase all over the world, this was just the beginning of a string of cancellations in the world of fashion.
Over the next few months, huge names in fashion along the likes of Versace, Chanel, Dior, Hermés, Max Mara and Gucci all put their shows on hold, some even cancelling them completely. When it came to Paris Fashion Week, both the menswear and Haute Couture shows were cancelled too. However, fast forward to June, where it was announced that the women’s shows of Paris Fashion Week would still go ahead as normal from the 28th September to the 6th October. So how exactly did the pandemic affect Fashion week? Drawing to a close a few days ago, we’re taking a look at just that.
Physical shows made a return, albeit with socially distanced guests and scaled back presentations. Dior’s unveiling of their Spring/Summer 2021 collection had made numerous changes to how they normally do things, with a maximum of 300 guests attending (almost a third of the usual amount) and all guests having their temperature taken as they entered the venue and attending shows wearing face coverings.
The situation meant certain brands getting creative with how they showcased their latest collections. In particular, French fashion house AMI displayed their first ever womenswear collection with a socially distanced display on the Seine River quayside, taking social distancing to the next level. While passersby were able to watch the display from a nearby bridge, around 140 guests were able to watch from a boat on the river, complete with screens onboard which allowed for them to get a closer look at each piece.
In contrast, despite some physical shows still going ahead, certain brands opted for alternatives. Dior broadcast their show on TikTok, while Italian fashion house Schiaparelli showcased their SS21 collection via video presentation. Balmain went for a combination of the two to celebrate their 75th anniversary, featuring a physical show that combined both real life and a virtual audience.
While the event certainly indicated that coronavirus could not impact the creativity of these world renowned brands, it was also tinged with a touch of sadness in the fashion world too. Kenzo unveiled their SS21 collection in an outdoor presentation, but just days later, the brand’s founder Kenzo Takada sadly passed away from complications linked to covid-19. Known for his love of vibrant colours and bold graphics, he was the first Japanese designer to make their mark on the Paris fashion scene, spending the rest of his career in the city after settling there in the 1960s.
While it has certainly been refreshing to see our favourite fashion houses returning to the catwalks (some in a slightly different form than others), it’s clear that we can be expecting a few more virtual events over the coming months. However, if we’ve learned one thing from Paris Fashion Week, it’s that these iconic designers will not let the pandemic get in the way of their creativity, and we for one, can’t wait to see what happens next.

Milan Fashion Week 2020 is over
First London, now Milan: Fashion Week will become Digital
As for London Fashion Week, which will become a digital event this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Milan Fashion Week will also move its calendar online.
From 14 to 17 July designers and creatives will have the opportunity to present the spring/summer 2021 men's collections and the spring/summer 2021 men's and women's pre-collections.
The Milan Digital Fashion Week will be visible on the digital channels of the National Chamber of Italian Fashion and will offer an inclusive vision of Made in Italy fashion dedicated to both big brands and new designers.
The National Chamber of Italian Fashion will use a digital platform on which contents such as photos and videos, interviews, talks and backstages will be presented, organized in slots dedicated to each brand, and all fashion insiders will be able to freely access.

Other digital events included in the program are in-depth webinars available on accreditation, live streaming lessons with the main players of the fashion system and a series of live performances organized by the networks of creatives that revolve around individual brands.
A secondary platform will instead be dedicated to showroom activities.
Tommy Hilfiger's initiative against Covid-19
“These circumstances call each of us into question, staying together is the best way to move forward. We also want to make our contribution and assist those who need it most. Together we will overcome every challenge and continue to do our best to serve the community. We are grateful for the dedication of healthcare professionals around the world.” commented Tommy Hilfiger in favor of the subjects and communities affected by the Coronavirus.
The US brand has announced the donation of over 10.000 white T-shirts to support all healthcare professionals who are engaged in helping patients with Covid-19 in Europe and the United States.
These are not tommy’s first initiatives against the pandemic, through the PVH Foundation, in fact, Tommy Hilfiger had donated $ 2 million to the COVID-19 charities fund, along with millions of insulating gowns and masks.

With the #MiuMe project, the brand invites people from all over the world - prominent personalities from the world of sport, art, dance and fashion, but also fans, to use mobile phones to film us in our home environment with I wear Miu Miu clothes and accessories.
To participate, just share your video on Instagram by tagging @MiuMiu and inserting the hashtag #MiuMe.
The goal is to celebrate freedom of expression, in presenting oneself in front of the lens in the way you prefer, elevating the "selfie" to a statement of your identity.
Each video will give a personal daily show that comes from the homes of multiple interpreters around the world. These moving FaceTime self-portraits will be collected and edited for the first phase of the project.

Raf Simons is the new co-creative director of Prada
The first co-signed collection will be the SS21 in September.
On the closing of Milan Women's Fashion Week FW20, Prada made the official announcement: Raf Simons will become co-creative director of Prada starting from April 2nd.
His responsibilities will concern both Prada menswear and womanswear.
The new role assumed by Simons in Prada marks the partnership of two of the biggest names in the fashion world. The first collection resulting from the new creative partnership will be Prada's SS21 which will be shown in September.
Rumors has it that Simons could also become the creative director of Miu Miu, with the aim of resurrecting the brand's menswear line. This may explain why Miu Miu's communications offices are about to be moved from Paris to Milan.
Moreover, Simons is not a stranger to Prada and the group behind the brand, we could rightly wonder if Simons and Miuccia Prada do not have any surprises in store for us!
